COMPLILING MY RESEARCH FOR THE FINAL PRESENTATION
I AM COMBINING ALL MY PAPER WORK FROM ALL CLASSES SO FAR AND AIM TO COMBINE THEM ALL TOGETHER IN A CLAY MADE OF PAPER. I INTEND TO USE THIS C,AY TO CREATE A NEW PIECE OF WORK. THE ULTIMATE COLLABORATION. THIS NEW PIECE OF WORK WILL REFLECT MY PROGRESS THROUGH TERM 1.1.
FROM SANDIMS CLASS I TAKE THE FAMILY TREE. I AM TO RESEARCH MY CULTURAL HISTORY AND EXPLORE THE TRADITION OF IRISH HOSPITALITY THROUGH THR TRADITION OF TEA.
FROM WOLFS CLASS I WILL TAKE THE MATERIAL RESEARCH OF PAPER AND USE THAT AS THE MEDIUM TO CREATE A NEW PIECE OF WOK. I WILL USE THIS ACT OF DESTRUCTUION AND RECREATING AS THE RITUAL.
FROM FINS CLASS I WILL TAKE THE ASPECT OF CARE. THIS GAVE ME THE IDEA OF RESEARCHING THE IRISH ACT OF HOSPITALITY AND CARE. IN IRELAND TO DENY A CUP OF TEA IS AN ACT OF GREAT DISPRECT. WHEN VISITING RELATIVES IT IS INTIRELY LIKELY, ALMOST EXPECTED TO CONSUME UPWARDS OF 10 CUPS OF TEA IN A DAY.
FROM JUANS CLASS I TAKE THE IDEA OF THE TIMELINE, THE PASSAGE OF TIME. EACH PIECE IS A LENGTHY PROCESS, I FIRST HAVE TO SOURCE THE PAPER, RIP IT UP INTO SMALL PIECES, ALLOW IT TO SOACK IN WATER FOR AT LEAST 24HOURS (THE LONGER THE BETTER). WHEN SOFT ENOUGH I USE A HAND BLENDER TO PULVERISE IT, SQUEEZE OUT THE EXCESS WATER, MIX IN A BINDING MEDIUM, AND ONLY THEN CAN I START TO BUILD UP THE PIECE.
DESTROYING MY WORK:

I found this really tricky at the beginning, destroying my work from my first term at WDKA. But what was I going to do with in anyway? I defiantly wasn't going to throw it out (I'm a hoarder). I was probably going to pile it under my bed and let it collect dust until I have to move house again. By destroying it and turning it into something new I am creating something that is still everything I have done over the past few months as well as a new piece of work.
I got particularity emotional when I started ripping up pictures I had used for my family tree. It felt unnatural and disrespectful to rip photos of my loved one. (don't take it personally mum)
Inspirations:
Making the paper mache:

1- Collect the paper - To start with for my experimental pieces I collected random magazines, receipts, flyers, catalogs and scraps of paper.
2- Rip up the paper - I prefer to use my hands to rip up the paper. This creates a rough edge which allows for the paper to absorb the water faster.
3- Let the paper soak. The longer the paper soaks the more the fibers break down to create a better and more even mache that is easier to work with.
4- squeeze out the excess water from the
CHANGE OF PLAN:
I decided to move away from the idea of recreating mugs and jugs that could be drank out of. Instead I decided to make an abstract shape, which reflects how I feel about the first term of study at WDKA. I got the idea for making this oddly shaped form from the process of making the mug.
